Visiting the Library

The MHS library operates differently from most public or university libraries. While we strive to provide researchers with access to all our collections, our primary concern must be to preserve our unique materials, and for that reason we enforce strict security protocols. The pages in this section—What to Expect, What to Bring, and How to Prepare--will help you become familiar with our policies and procedures.

The MHS library is open to the public Monday through Saturday for onsite research visits:

Monday, Wednesday - Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:45 PM

Tuesday, 9:30 AM to 7:45 PM

Saturday, 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM

*Staff retrieves materials up to 45 minutes before the library closes.

Reading room closes 15 minutes before the library.

To protect the health of researchers and staff amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the MHS Library has implemented the following temporary policies:

All researchers are encouraged to request an appointment in advance of arriving at the MHS. Please visit our Appointment Request Form to select your preferred visit dates. Researchers with confirmed appointments will be guaranteed a seat in the reading room on their appointment date. Walk in researchers will be accommodated if spots are available on the daily schedule.
